Geneva Motor Show: Audi A5 TDI Coupe Revealed
Feast your eyes on Audi's new A5, some two weeks before the car's actual unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show. We broke news of this car testing at the Nurburgring back in October and it appears the company has--thankfully--put some more emotion into the design of the production version. This show car will debut with the company's 3.0-liter TDI V-6, giving diesel fans a reason to cheer. Will the A5 come to our shores with this engine? Don't bet on it for the first wave of orders, but once we get our 50-state self in order, we expect that to be the case. Look for V-6, V-8, and V-10 gasoline engines for our market at launch.
The 6-series/CLK-fighter looks slightly longer than we had originally imagined, but it could be just the perspective of the photos. Audi's decision to move the engine behind the front axle is a huge part of this long-legged look, and although we don't have a dead profile shot here, we can hope the front overhang is as short as it appears.
As reported a few weeks ago, the A5 is expected to find a cozy niche within the Audi brand lineup--slotting between the A6 and A4, of course, but it will actually take over all A4 cabriolet duties in the future. The A4 drop top will be phased out once the A5 cabriolet comes online. There's no indication of when that will happen, but we expect somewhere around a year after the coupe's unveiling. Folding hardtop? You bet.
We'll be live at Geneva with more photos and information.

Here's a look at the car during testing in 2006:

Sweet car!!!

Why does a car like this have to go after BMWs priced to the stratosphere? This would look like an ideal competetor to the I35 coupe, but it will likely be priced out of that league. Is this car really that much bigger?
And once again, we Americans are robbed of a fuel and [relatively] enviroment-freindly technology because of our own over-grown governmental regulations.

Very disappointing - the original Novalari concept was fabulous - this is too 'soft' and derivative. Looks like a 335i at the back. And the interior is just like the A6 - why not follow the new design used in the R8 or TT?

[...] Audi’s A5 Coupe breaking cover was the big story of the day. That is, until our friend Mike Spinelli broke out his trump card: Audi S5 pictures, detailing Audi’s go-even-faster model. Will the S5 launch at Geneva? Will it have a V-8 or V-10? DSG or six-speed? At this point all we have is hope (and three photos). [...]

This is very 3-series, especially from the rear 3/4 shot.

The new Honda Accord coupe concept is looking alot like this car, or is it the other way around. And the Honda will leave more of your money in your pocket.

It does look like the 3-series from behind. But it looks a little more refined, and the front looks better.

i think the wheelbase is too long, looks kinda funky, but still better looking than a 3 series

this is a great looking car. I am an Audi fanatic driving a 2006 A4 Avant 2 liter Turbo. I hope the diesel will come to North America. I has several experiences with diesel engines with MB and VW and I was pleasantly satisfied. There is no difference today between gaz and diesel engine. Performance is similar and fuel economy on TDi engines is amazing.

[...] Cold, clean Geneva accepted us into her Motor Show this morning. We’re all set up in the Pal Expo Center’s media center, a classic piece of 1970s design. While I’m typing this message, our own Chris Paukert and Joe Case have run off to cover the morning’s VW and Audi press conferences. Of course, we will bring you details of Audi’s A5 and S5 live and in the metal. [...]

How can Audi bring the A4 and Q7 TDI to the US, but not the A5? Why would the regulations apply differently to these models? Isn't it the same engine? Is Audi scrapping the whole initiative in the US?
