i was kind of hoping for something closer to 27k for the 128. i was also hoping for a curb weight about 500 lbs less so its kind of a moot point.
Good news out of Frankfurt today—according to a new report in Automotive News, BMW’s forthcoming 1-series coupe will nose in under $30,000 when it arrives in the U.S. this spring.
While that’s hardly discount stuff, the rear-drive, entry-level offering has enthusiasts salivating, because even the entry-level 128i will arrive packing a 230-horsepower inline-6. The even more compelling 300-horsepower 135i will command closer to $35k as a starting point, but that should still be enough to spirit away a few sales from Audi A3 and Volvo C30 intenders. BMW’s CEO, Tom Purves, also thinks that the MSRP will be low enough that it will cajole “customers from the likes of Honda, Toyota and Mazda.”
From what we’ve seen here in Frankfurt, we’re ready for the baby Bimmer.
Game on.

V-6?… Sure it’s not an inline?
If the 135i has STI/Evolution-levels-of-performance that some are speculating, $35K will still be a good deal!
That 135 is going to be a screamer! I can’t wait. It’ll get very serious consideration from my end of the world. Fast as hell, BMW build/features/name, small… It’s wonderful!
If they do this model like the others, you’ll have to add another $5k in options to get things you would already normally expect in a car with this kind of badge.
certainly won’t be “affordable” here in Canada… our stripper 323i is 35,600… the RWD 328i is 41K
I was just thinking the same as the Stig…how lowly is the standard equipment level going to be?
“Under 30K” means $29,995. I personally think that’s expensive, especially considering that a unit at that price (if you can find one) will be bare-bones. But on the other hand, BMW shouldn’t dilute their brand image with a “cheap” car.
Stripped is fine, ugly isn’t. Damn you Bangle! This would have been a near guaranteed sell if BMW still made attractive cars - slightly conservative, but subtly aggressive. Looking good without attracting the police. Now forget it and I’ve wanted a new 2002 for years. Though I guess it’s still too heavy to be a true 2002 successor.
From what I understand the “base” 135i includes the Sport Package. That’s all I need.

I wouldn’t rule out a CSL edition that could have a couple hundred pounds shed. The 128i looks like the logical step up from a Cooper–small and agile. I’m psyched about the 135i–this could be the Cayman of Bimmers.
I agree with Mena. I’ll take a bare bones 135i and be thrilled with it.
the base is the 128
in the 3 series the 3 liter turbo engine is like a $7k option! exect the 135 to be start around 35k
Stig,
It wouldn’t be a German car if they didn’t make you pay for the extras now would it? At least they aren’t as bad as Porsche about omitting things you’d expect to find when spending north of $30k.
LOL point taken Kal
FYI I see on Edmonds the BMW Z4 has $5500 in dealer cash till the end of the month. So they mark em up to mark em down.
I still don’t like that line running underneath the doors…it looks like the car is sagging.
[…] In another move that should shock nobody, BMW announces the 1-series convertible will show up at U.S. dealerships starting in the spring of 2008, the same time as the 1-series coupe. Only 128i convertibles will be on sale at first, with the 135i convertible arriving some time later next year. […]
