Don’t Call it Dino: Ferrari GT California to be Shown at Detroit
We already told you about Ferrari’s plans to use direct injection, but we didn’t realize the first application would be appearing at the 2008 North American International Auto Show.
Motor Authority reports that Ferrari’s request to trademark the name GT California has been put on hold. The Ferrari GT California is rumored to be a 2+2 coupe with direct injection based on the F430 chassis. It should appear at the Detroit Auto Show in January.
(Click through to find out why Ferrari’s request has been put on hold.)
The problem is Ford already has the rights to California Special for one of their Mustang GT variants. This may have been deemed too similar to Ferrari’s request to grant immediate approval. Ferrari is expected to acquire the rights to GT California once the proper documentation is filed. It doesn’t make sense to go through all the effort of securing a new trademark unless Ferrari is planning to build a new vehicle with that name.

The California Special goes back the mid-sixities. Ford dealers sold hi-po notchback coupes under the name. Yeah, I'd prefer the 250 GT California Spider, too.

When did the 250GT California Ferrari come out?

The 250 GT California is the car made famous in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It was a late 50s/early 60s Ferrari.

GT California...now that's a pretty awesome name for a car.

The 250 GT California Spyder was released as a 1957 model for export to the United States. Scaglietti handled the body work. The car shown on Ferris Bueller's Day Off was a replica, as actual California Spyders were running for a lot of money even then in long- or short-wheelbase form.
