While most peopled who attended the New York Auto Show launch of the Pontiac Solstice GXP admired the curvaceous silhouette of the coupe, fewer mentioned the car’s performance potential. That could soon change as new rumors tell us that Pontiac is planning turbo-charged version of the Solstice’s Ecotec four-cylinder that could be good for 300 or more horsepower. That kind of power would seemingly put the Solstice Coupe into far closer competition with cars like Nissan’s Z.

If such a performance variant does come about, look for the engine to find its way into the Saturn Sky Redline as well as the convertible Solstice, and to be hooked up to a manual five-speed transmission. The high-po model is said to be slated for just after the coupe goes on sale next year.

nice, put 300+ hp and reduce the weight. and call it a day.

Wow. This has to be the only car in the world where the trunk of the convertible is actually BIGGER than the trunk on the coupe. Pontiac strikes again with the impractical and the ugly… And the cheap plastic interior.

Ummm..being an owner of the convertible I will say that the coupe DEFINITELY has more trunk room than the convertible. No question about that. I’m more interested in the 300hp.

This would rock. With the lines and mentioned performance. does anyone see a little of the early 70’s firbirds? That smooth fastback design and they look similar up front too. All the more reason to buy.

I like this car alot. it looked even better in person at NY auto show. That rear window is really cool. I’m not really seeing early 70s firebird tho.

This looks nothing like any Firebird I’ve ever seen.

Somebody wake me when the horsepower wars end…

Ron April 3rd, 2008 9:37 PM Link

Mike’s right… That thing’s made of cheap parts and is ugly to boot. Speaking of boots, that thing’s tiny!

Mike April 3rd, 2008 9:43 PM Link

Mo, I don’t think its me thats on the drugs. Look what a better exterior and a few shiny parts on the inside do for the Saturn Sky! I’d take a Sky loooong before I’d even consider buying a Solstice. It’s just that bug-eyed front end. Ruins what could have been a very good car. MX-5 still holds the trump car of this trio, though.

My hope is that Mazda will drop a version of the turbo MZR into the Miata to compete. Mmm.

Hey, my briefcase will fit under that glass, and that’s all I need out of a daily driver.

Steve April 4th, 2008 12:42 PM Link

Guys, seriously? The Miata? Snooze.

Ducati Minor April 4th, 2008 12:51 PM Link

I agree–the Miata is an ancient joke.
