Editor’s Letter: Topless Autumn Motoring
With fall upon us here in Michigan, I can’t help but sigh whenever I see enthusiast friends putting away their convertibles. Perhaps it’s the tumbling temperatures or a lack of daylight, but most droptop drivers I see on the roads appear set on keeping their roofs drum-tight.
This is a shame, as there is no finer way to celebrate the third season’s chlorophyll-purging arrival than threading along a tree-lined road with the top down.

As an owner of 2 convertibles (a 1972 MGB and 2007 SAAB 9-3,) I personally think that anyone driving with the top up on a beautiful day should have their convertible taken away from them!!!

As a Californian just a couple miles from the beach, I sob that I don't have a convertible. But I'm saving up for that used 748 to make up for it.

I can't help but sigh when I see people trying to not look cold out on the highway, temps in the 40's, driving their convertibles with their tops down thinking it looks good.

I can count on my digits the number of times I've driven my old E-type with the top up in all the years I've owned it, and have a few left over. Temperature has nothing to do with it, but precipitation does. Unfortunately I live in the rainiest region on this continent, so I just have to deal with it. I do want a convertible as my daily driver though. When will somebody build me one with a turbo-diesel engine?? =)

I do not drive topless because I think it looks cool, I drive topless because I enjoy driving topless. Since my SAAB has heated seats and a blast furnace for a heater, I can enjoy top down motoring when it is colder outside. Just yesterday here in Dallas, it was 73F/22C outside with a beautiful near-cloudless blue sky. On my way home from work I counted all the convertibles I saw. Other than myself, I saw an early 90's Toyota Celica, 2 per-gen Mustangs, 1 newer CLK, 2 Z4's, a new MX-5 Miata and a Lexus SC430. I was the only one top down. Such a waste...
