Cadillac’s CTS sedan is set to debut later this summer to legions of fans and more than a few curious onlookers who previously bought BMW and Lexus sedans. Our friends at Brenda Priddy and Company have snapped shots of the CTS’s angrier older brother, the V-series model. Priddy’s sources suggest the new car has an internal GM code of “GMX322 V S/C,” with S/C suggesting that the car will be offered in both sedan and coupe form.

Priddy reports that the new V will feature an engine currently called the “LSA,” which is a new supercharged V-8 good for “at least 500 horsepower.” This would be a significant upgrade over the current generation CTS-V’s 400 horsepower (from a naturally aspirated 6.0-liter small-block V-8). For transmissions, Cadillac will apparently offer both a manual six-speed and an automatic with paddle shifters.

Production is expected to start in the end of 2008. Pricing should be higher than the current car’s $53,470, but not as high as $60,000.

The 2009 CTS-V will use the “LSA” motor. This is another new supercharged, small block V8. This new blown V8 will be good for at least 500hp.

A number of 515-525hp may even be possible, and even higher numbers have been rumored. The CTS-V will feature a supercharger integrated into the intake manifold. This is the same setup the upcoming Corvette SS / Blue Devil will have with its LS9 motor.

However, while the Corvette SS motor will be hand built at the Performance Build Center in Wixom, MI, the Cadillac’s LSA motor will be built in a conventional motor plant. Automatic and manual transmissions will be available, and an optional paddle shift feature is also anticipated. Production on the new CTS V-Series will start in September of 2008, and will be limited to about 7000 units annually. Internally, GM is referring to the car as “GMX322 V S/C.”

In the past, the current CTS-V has suffered from rear-end problems. Specifically, wheel hop. The 2009 CTS-V will feature a completely re-done rear end with a much better rear axle. Sources say this has eliminated the wheel hop issue altogether. The ‘09 will continue to utilize a massive set of brembo brakes up front and in back. While the wheels on this prototype are not production spec, the wider tires and larger exhaust pipes certainly are. Bob Lutz has been quoted saying the 2009 CTS-V “will be at a power level only described as unexpectedly high.”

Then referencing the current BMW M5, Lutz said the CTSV “will suck the doors off” the competition if the new M5 isn’t significantly better. After driving a prototype, Lutz said “flat-out incredible. I’ve never driven anything like that.”

can’t wait for it, if it is around 500 bhp the car can beat BMW M5.

Yummy. Oh so yummy.

If they’ve truly fixed the glass-fragile rear end, and beefed up the quality of the interior components, sign me up!

It should sell.
BMW M = too ugly.
Audi RS = AWD.
Mercedes AMG = too expensive.

…seems like the CTS-V will be the only properly handsome, manual gearbox, RWD car in its segment

Lets just hope it doesn’t have trouble putting its power down to the ground like the 6MT E60 M5.

“with S/C tipping us off to the fact that the car will likely be offered in both sedan and coupe form.”

Hahahah. S/C = supercharged, genius.

Take THAT BMW!

With the 335i being twin-turbo’d from the factory, I’m less impressed with the new M3 although I don’t think it’s ugly, BMW’s have never been beautiful cars except the M1 and maybe the 3.0CSL.

Im a current owner of an 05 CTS-V…and it already destroys any of the Ms around the track. Ive heard different rumors about the supercharger..im hearing its the current z06 motor which makes more sense to me. Regardless..I cant complain..100 more HP and an even better rear and suspension..whats not to like in the new V.

The new CTS-V needs a supercharger like Kate Winslet needs more sex appeal. Therse motors tend to be fussy and abrupt. They should just put the stock Z06 Corvette motor (LS7?) in there, and make the hand-built hi-po LS9 an expensive option for the few who need more. Through the 1/4 in the twelves and a top speed of 180 mph - enough already! The car does not need a horsepower race with M-B and BMW.

The engineering talent freed up from playing with superchargers around looking with more motor can themn be deployed on waorking on achieving that supernatural balance between ride and handling that BMW offers; and the reliability and durability that Lexus offers.

Price it thousands less than those their competing cars and truck the profit procceds to the bank!

The photos also seem to show the same carbon ceramic brake set up from the Corvette SS. That would be a first for the segment!

Grille shape, especially the relief, looks really Pontiac-ish to me.

They’ll price this thing out of competition. So expect this to be a hot bargain on the used lots in a couple of years, only to be followed a few years later by horror stories at the shop.

[…] Despite being down on power compared to the super ‘Vette, the CTS-V is expected to make the new BMW M3 and Audi RS4 look downright pokey. And judging by the spy shots our photographers have captured of some early prototypes, the rest of the package looks to be the business, as well. […]

Just in time for my next car purchase! I’ve been looking at pre-owned M-B E55 and a few others, but this CTS-V will probably be the first U.S. built car I’ve owned in years. Glad it will have an auto available…Way to go GM!!

Another GM partially engineered automobile, rear wheels hopping, rear ends breaking, oh yea, quality engineering unless you launch with some vigor then it just comes undone. GM does great engines for the money but they need to hire Mercedes chassis dymanics engineering cause GM doesn’t have a clue on how to combine handling and reasonable road comfort into a design. You would think that they would actually test these piles of junk before they slap them on the showroom floor. My first and last GM product, ever. The Germans know how to build an automobile, the Americans build transportation.
