While Mazda recently rolled out a facelifted version of the current Axela/Mazda 3 in Japan, the car is going on five years since its debut and a new model is on the horizon.
Japan’s The My Car magazine has put together a rendering of the upcoming next-generation Axela/Mazda 3. Not surprisingly, the rendering includes a lot of styling features borrowed from both the new Mazda 6/Atenza and the popular Mazda 2/Demio compact car.
Engines for the new Axela in Japan are expected to range from a base 1.5-liter four cylinder to a 2.5-liter four cylinder borrowed from the Atenza/6. Like the current car, both a four-door sedan and five-door hatchback are likely to be offered. Rumors have the redesigned model being shown in Paris this fall and it may be on sale in the spring of 2009.
It’s nice to see styling trends heading back in the direction of lower belt- and window-lines, resulting in better visibility and a more spacious feeling cabin. I really dislike the high beltlines on so many cars these days.
I agree 100% with Aaron! Remember those great older BMW’s like the 3.0 , 2800 CS and 2002? You really had a good view from the driver’s seat in those classics.
That would be great, but they will never put the beltline that low.

no rederings of the hatchback? Looks nice, but I am skeptical, as it just looks like a combination on the new Mazda2 and new Mazda6. The front is identical to the 6. Renderings will keep coming out, but Mazda will keep it well under raps until it is officially displayed. I bet it looks something like the “2018 Mazda3″ that was created through the contest.
