While Acura just unveiled its refreshed 2009 RL, and plans to unveil the all-new TSX in New York, Japan’s Best Car Magazine is already speculating about the next generation RL. While the rendering looks awfully similar to the Accord which is sold in Japan as the Inspire the big news is what may be underneath. The magazine has reason to believe the car will be offered with a 4.5-liter V-8 engine estimated to have over 400 horsepower.

Sold as the Honda Legend in Japan, the new car is also speculated to have a new rear wheel drive-based AWD system. The magazine says the car should debut for the Japan market in 2010. Enthusiasts and car buyers have been calling for a V-8 powered RL for awhile and this may be just what the car needs to go head to head with Lexus, Infiniti and the European brands.

Hell, they’ve been calling for it since the second-generation Legend appeared. That’s about when the “hey, this looks like it could be RWD” comments started up too, and it took what, ten more years before the SH-AWD setup finally appeared?

Yeah, I’ll believe it when I see it in my Acura dealer’s showroom.

With sales of V8s dropping this does not sound like a good idea, they should stick to direct injection V6s and turbos like other luxury maufacturers

Well, if they want to compete with those other marquees, I hope they do something about the RL’s still-bland styling. For around 45k, I think you can get a better looking Lexus or Infiniti with comparable performance.

[…] Honda Motor Co. has issued two separate recalls for its Acura TL sedan. The recalls stem from a problem with the windshield wiper motor and a faulty power steering hose – which due to high temps can melt and leak power steering fluid, which can leak onto the catalytic converter and cause a fire. Just a chop of the 08 accord. Next RL will have different styling. Japanese magazines are known to do this. They photoshop cars and claim they are a new model. They however, did a great job on the 07 CR-V a while back. They used an RDX and was very close to the final design.
