Great news! That Powerball ticket you bought last month and has been floating around your desk, turned out to be the winner of several hundred million dollars. So the question is a simple one, what’s your first automotive purchase (one writer’s answer pictured)? Enjoy our favorite daydream, and leave your answer in comments.

I have to agree regarding the Lancia Stratos. It probably would be my first purchase. My second would probably be a Ferrari 365GTB/4 coupe (Daytona). A front-engined V12, with a clutch and gated shifter. That’s my old-school style.

mbslrm December 9th, 2007 4:38 PM Link

It would have to be a 911 Turbo S. Since the 997 variant isn’t out yet, I would probably settle for a 997 Turbo.

Zelman December 9th, 2007 5:08 PM Link

1957 Chevy Bel Air, then put an LS7 in it.

Jeff December 9th, 2007 5:12 PM Link

I’d find an E30 M3 in awesome condition and daily drive it. I’d also get the ball rolling on my F430 in rosso corsa, but I’d have to wait a while, so E30 it is right off the bat.

Limo with a chauffeur.

Bentley Continental Speedster

Aside for David E.;
I would like to present a designer/inventor - Norbert Hamy - who will be visiting David Cole on December 19th in Ann Arbor, to David E.

Is this possible? As someone who loves transportation technology, yo will not be disappointed. Feel free to check with Davide Cole after his meeting.

David, I hope you remember me from the Ruger Sr. funeral in July 2002. We did correspond for a short while afterward and then I lost touch and you started Winding Road…

I, of course, have my obligatory story of the DED, Jr. autograph from 1967 - USGP - Watkins Glen; while you were touring the “old circuit” with Brock Yates.

Reeves says hello…

As I haven’t a job at the mo… and that I recently discovered what bliss it was to drive, I would say the Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE

I would keep my SLK 350 but tret her to a full leather interior (dashboard, center console, etc…)

OK modest choice if it’s a really big win, but there are so much things I want to do with my lottery money…

Lego December 9th, 2007 6:04 PM Link

If I win…only armor tank ;)

jsharnik December 9th, 2007 6:15 PM Link

Mercedes E-class Wagen to get from point A to point B. The REAL question is, now that basic my transportation needs are taken care of, what will I bu next? Bently? Aston? The mind boggles…

An f430 scuderia, a 599 gtb, an enzo, an f40 and a 250gt berlinneta lusso. For weekend races i’d take an fxx, a gto and 330 p3 or p4.

One car, buddy.

1970 Maserati Ghibli Spyder.

Jonathan Fung [Gotakon] December 9th, 2007 7:03 PM Link

Since I’m not too big on waiting lists, I’ll go with something tame: Toyota Tacoma Double Cab with a whole bunch of after market goodies.

samue23 December 9th, 2007 7:06 PM Link

Porsche 911 Carrera 4, in dark blue, with peanut butter leather and a set of BBS wheels! Oh and a Cayenne to match!

Datsun Daiv December 9th, 2007 7:26 PM Link

I’d opt for a do-it-yourself supercar/grocery-getter.
I’d start with a lowered 1970 Datsun 240-Z with 18’s, add a liquid blue “Velorosa” body kit, cut the roof (go convertible) and drop in a twin-turbo LT-1 and built T-5. Remember, this is just a START…

For when you just have to get out of town a Maserati GranTurismo. For when you need to get around town a R53 MINI Cooper with John Cooper Works tweaking so that it snaps of the line but does not consume the fuel the Cooper S does. For hauling the family a Citroen C4 Picasso and for sheer nostalgia sack, a 1969 Ford Mustang Fastback that I would throw a silly amount of money at.

First car to buy: Green Jag XK for my pops. The car he’s always admired, can easily afford, but is too cheap to buy it for himself…

Second car I’d buy: C6 Corvette to hold me over till the new M3 6-speed 4-Door I’m waitlisted for comes through. Then I’d start shopping.

Ducati Minor…

Ghibli spyder… Great pick. My uncle had one when I was a kid. He also had a Pantera.

For me: Orange Pantera with a CRAZY motor.

Jeb December 9th, 2007 8:51 PM Link

E63, then a custom built Westfield SEi, and then, since money is no object, all the cheapo engine-swapped older cars I can think of. Chevy 350 in a Fiero? Here, get me two!

Oh, ummm……I’ll take that Pratt & Miller C6RS.

Matt B December 9th, 2007 9:38 PM Link

I’ll have to second the 911 4S but I’d want one with the (so far) elusive PDK transmission (I have DSG in my GTI and it’s amazing).

I would also like an HPA GTI, and a 599 for good measure.

I’d be keeping my GTI :)

Jaymez December 9th, 2007 9:42 PM Link

Holden Commodore SS and SS Ute. Not the American versions that are coming over, but, the original Australian versions. After that, a Silverado 454SS. No sports cars for me.

JDM Spec NSX-R!

Arkay December 9th, 2007 10:13 PM Link

As I already have an E63 AMG as my daily driver, I’d opt for the Carrera GT as a normal street legal car.

If going for the wild blue yonder, then I’d queue up for the one of ten Zonda Rs to be built - and get a Zonda F to tide me over!

Sean December 9th, 2007 10:16 PM Link

A nice F40. THEN a Stratos!

Wes December 9th, 2007 10:42 PM Link

How big is the payout? My tastes are expensive…

By Era:

30s: A Duesenberg SJ or an Auburn Speedster. Maybe even a 540K Special Roadster.

40s: A Panzerkampfwagen MkV

50s: a 300sl (I prefer the roadster, blasphemy I know!)

60s: A Ferrari 275 NART Spyder

70s: A Lancia Stratos (reading my mind?)

80s: a 959

90s: a McLaren F1

00s: An Alfa Romeo 8C

And of course, the Complete Coventry Collection:
An SS-90 or SS-100, an alloy-bodied XK 120, a C-type, D-type, XK-SS, E-type, XJ-13 (has to be a replica!), and an XJ-220.

Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, it’s the least popular Ferrari which means it’d be the least common on the road, plus its about the only model that you can walk in and buy new without having to wait on a list or whatnot. Plus it’s an awesome GT type car.

Beyond that, probably a few classics, Jag E-type, maybe an old Aston or two, 60’s-ish Lincoln Continental (convertible even), etc etc.
