‘08 NAIAS: Have A Geely Good Time Together

Geely Press Conference

Having stood among the hordes of journalists attending the press conference for Geely, one of a handful of Chinese automakers at the Detroit show, we’re not really sure what all we - or they, even - have to report.

Sure, we stood around and watched a 10-minute long soap opera describing how one discovers life via an automobile. Apparently, this consists of dressing like an Elvis clone, meeting a future wife by almost running over her sharpei, and laughing as your toddler paints all over your car with (presumably lead-based) paints.

We also watched as NAIAS chairman Carl Galeana and Wayne County (Mich.) Executive Robert Ficano invoked signs of goodwill, hoping to lure some sort of Chinese industrial presence to Michigan. And yes, we stood around as Geely explained how it’s BABS technology fights to eliminate the “deadliest” form of an accident - a tire blowout - by modulating braking force across all four wheels.

Still, we don’t have much to report. A newer Geely sedan and a TX4 taxi, built under license from London Taxi Inc, were on the stand, but the company still didn’t have any firm timeframe as to when a Geely car would be sold in America. We know it’s a realistic possibility - but the “when” part of the equation seems to have few possible solutions.
