Why?
Despite recent rumors that the Maybach brand may be a target for closure by parent company Mercedes-Benz, and the fact of its rather improbable appeal, a production version of the four-door convertible Maybach Landaulet limousine is on its way.
The car made its debut at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show as a possible target for the most conspicuous of consumers. Now Hans-Dieter Multhaupt, vice president of program management for Maybach, says that the auto will be offered for sale in the U.S. starting in December of this year. The Landaulet will also carry a price tag of a whopping $1.35 million.

Says Muthaupt, “The Landaulet is for a superrich individual who wants something that is extremely extraordinary and enjoys being driven in a car with acres of sky above them.”
The car luxurious hauler is designed to offer passengers the open-air ride and glamorous rolling stage found in similar cars of old, with the same doors, windows, and glass panel divider of a traditional limo.

Why?
Maybach can’t sell the ordinary ugly cars while Bentleys are flying out the door at record breaking paces. My prediction is that no more than 10 of these cars will be sold before Mercedes finally shut down Maybach production for good.
There was a QOTD a couple of weeks ago asking what the most useless car was.
This is the answer
Next Pope-mobile?
For $1.35 million, I could buy a previous generation S65 (with basically the same engine and using the same chassis as this barge), send it to a nice customizer shop, have them stretch it 12 inches, chop off the back of the roof and paint it a nice colour. Plus install all the entertainment and performance gizmos I want. And still save enough to buy a nice lake house and boat.
So to echo the above sentiments, what is the point of this Maybach? MB needs to hill Maybach and let AMG build some unique cars…
Next time you pump your gas just imagine the Sheik from Dubai driving around in one of these while he is laughing at us for paying the gas prices they jacked up!
Do you pronounce that name “Landyacht?”
who would waste his/her money over this???
Maybach needs to die already, its sheetmetal is not distinctive from Mercedes and they are big and heavy and no in the same league as Rolls or Bentley
1.35 mil for a car? What a waste. You can get a prime high-end beachfront condo in Hawaii for that money.
Or a real car, like a Duesenberg, for example.

All it needs now is a toilet (or does it already have one) and it’s complete! Seriously this car looks like a can that has been partially opened, if the sides went down in the back or the entire top came off it might not be so bad, but I guess they have to keep the front on so that no one can see the driver… or maybe so the embarrassed driver can hide.
