Nice. Now the SS belongs on the HHR. Bigger rotors would have been nice.
Chevrolet looks to be prepping a turbo-powered HHR crossover with an “SS” badge, sourcing the Pontiac Soltice GXP’s turbocharged, direct-injection in-line four, which was rated at 260 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque (in the Solstice, at least). These shots of the HHR SS mule indicate the bowtie brand engineers are attempting to conceal the intercooler (look at the front bumper). Whether or not the turbo powerplant will make it into this HHR body style or a forthcoming, freshened version remains unclear at this point.Although nearly all powertrains cross multiple platforms in today’s GM, Chevy has a special history with turbocharging. The 1962 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder is generally believed to be the second widely-produced automobile with a turbocharger (the first being the the ‘62 Olds Cutlass Jetfire).

Chevy is just going to make a great ride faster yet….Here Cruiser,Cruiser!!!

Enough with the overuse of the SS already. What’s next, an Aveo SS?
I’m not saying it couldn’t happen but, it looks like Ol’ Generous Motors stung the “auto writers” again with a shill.
I’m concerned that 260HP is too much power for a FWD car that’s this small. The Dodge SRT4 had around 240HP and it was a handful. I hope the HHR SS will be all-wheel drive, or it’ll probably be uncontrollable.
Without a Camaro to slap the SS badge on, GM might as well keep using it. Dodge has SRT, Ford has SVT (not that any vehicles use the moniker), GM should just use SS for its in house tuners. Now they need to throw this engine into the Cobalt SS and get rid of that wimpy supercharged Ecotec. With the new SRT4 Caliber there seems to be a space opened up for a small car American tuner .

Did the car have manufacturer plates? I don’t necessarily believe this is something GM did as opposed to a custom job someone did to their personal HHR. If it was spotted outside a GM facility or had plates or something like that, however, please do tell and prove me wrong.
[…] Whoa, is that an intercooler we see buried deep in the lower front bumper of this otherwise quotidian HHR? Indeed it is, and Winding Road is guessing it’s connected to the Pontiac Solstice GXP’s direct-injected turbo-four that makes 260 hp and 260 ft-lbs. of torque. SS also means bigger wheels and this mule has much larger shoes than the standard High Heritage Roof. The HHR will be refreshened in the near future, so it’s not known whether the SS badge will be affixed to the current body style or an updated one. Still, props to Chris Doane for snapping this shot of the HHR’s intercooler peaking out. Good eye, kid. Good eye. […]
Its Heritage High Roof buddy…………
as you know the ones in the know have said that 98% of all chevys ever make are still on the road,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and the other 2% made it home
Leave it to Chevy to come late to the party….As a Cruiser Turbo owner, I’m not scared….
[…] Deve ser sim, e o site Winding Road acha que o motor deve ser o do Pontiac Solstice GXP que tem injeção direta e um turbo, chegando a 260 cavalos…. a sigla SS também significa rodas maiores! […]
@ John - the barcode in the windshield (driver’s side) tips it off to being a GM-owned vehicle.

the hhr is the ugliest car in the world i wish they would gather everysingle one of them up and drop a bomb on them!!!
LMAO!!! That’s a joke! GM is late to the party as usual! An ‘05 Stage 1 equipped PTGT easily makes more power, and once you start adding more it’ll easily blow that HHR away! Plus the new Caliber SRT-4 will have 300hp stock. Sorry GM, I love Chevys, but it too little too late again!
Anyone ever think that this is a mule for the Cobalt SS, or even a Delta test vehicle for the 2.0T motor?
And great, you need a stage 1 PT to get up to a stock HHR SS. The PT is still one ugly beast, and the HHR is one good looking vehicle. GM has shown that they can get 325hp out of this engine, and thats just with an engine tune. And lets not get started on that fugly pig looking Caliber. Cheapest interior ever might I add.
I hope that Chevy makes the “molded assist steps” standard equipment on the 2008. They didn’t do it in initial production, and I don’t think they are included on the 2007. They are necessary in order to keep the paint on your rear doors.
I wish a picture of the rear brakes had been published since the drums on the back of the HHR are all that’s keeping me from buying one. Perhaps the SS will have disc brakes on the rear.
Why NOT Make it rear wheel DRIVE for us old goats that know what drifting really is. If they are afraid to make the CAMARO, just give us something affordable to play with, we all can’t afford the SSR or Z 06 so do something good. PS The General needs to find some one to design the Camaro other than the ones who did the astek and the other RUBBERMAID beauts that they have come up with. ALMOST make a man want a Mustang????>”
The HHR is the ABSOLUTE UGLIEST VEHICLE EVER MADE.
I would rather drive a 1976 econobox with a landmine for an airbag than be seen in this POS.
I JUST PURCHASED A HHR 2LT AND I LOVE IT, FOR ALL OF YOU HATERS THAT DRIVE A PUT CRUISER, DON’T BE MAD BECAUSE CHEVY OUT DID CHRYSLER.
Already have an SS. Took a wrecked Cobalt turbocharged engine and dropped it into my 2006 HHR. Runs like a scalded dog even with front wheel drive. Put SS badges on it (don’t want to hide anything) and get lots of looks.
As a PREVIOUS owner of an HHR, yes I bought one of the first ones out last July 8,2005,and sold it 6 months later, the hole SS thing is nice, but they need to lose the front wheel drive. I have owned over 250 cars in the 40 years of driving, all makes and brands, and the one thing I can say is the HHR is a nice vehicle, but if you want real performance you need to make the HHR either RWD or AWD, these front wheel drive automobiles are not ment to take mega torque and horsepower. Case in point I bought a Pontiac Grand Prix GXP with the 5.3 liter engine, with 300hp, and 325 ft pounds of torque, and let me say, even with all the upgraded hardware, it was a hand full, torque steer out of sight!!!!! Give me either RWD or AWD any day!!!!! I am done with FWD!!!! I now own a Trailblazer SS AWD. As for bashing the PT. Cruiser, I bought my wife one of the first back in 2000, and she has had it for almost 6 years,it has been a great automobile, we have not had one problem with it, so just because you like a certain brand, I prefer GM, doesn’t make the others any less of a vehicle than what you have, enjoy your vehicle, and let others do the same.
now that they have this turbo 2.0 will they put it in the cobalt??
Im an owner of a stage 2 srt4, with many mods, and wouldnt trade it for anything. But if this is true, i may reconsider
ya no all this crap Gm talks is geting boring while they are talking other oem’s are doing. I would like to by an HHR but come on rear drum brakes it’s bad enought that the camaro is now a 2008 or will it be an 09 don’t get me wrong the trucks are nice the corvettes are way cool. They need to quit bringing knifes to a gun fights
OK,
I am just the normal rotm family guy with grown kids and not a lot of spending cash. I just traded for an HHR based on the style and the fact that it gets pretty decent gas mileage. All you racing gurus that want all the SS stuff included seem to forget a few things. We are live in a country where racing is on the track and not on the street. We also have to live with the female side of the vehicle screaming “Slow Down” and I would bet that most of the respondents here are above 30 so cry, whine, wish and complain. The HHR is just fine without the Turbo. And my insurance went down instead of up when I bought it. So there! Its a nice ride, and thats just the way I like it. Oh, btw it does get plenty of lookers. Mine is referred to as the Mini-Hearse. Its dark silver and actually quite classy looking. Thats the ol ladies comments.
well not everyone is a square and some people like a little “push” in their car. I am 26 and drive a supercharged Regal GS. While it may not be the fastest car, I certainly get through traffic on the highway in a hurry. My mother’s boyfriend is in his 50’s and has a V8 Lincoln LS, and there are many other older folks who are enthusiasts so your opinion is not universal. There is a reason why manufacturers are coming out with all these performance cars, don’t you think? The HHR is a dog, and some people who like the styling may want that extra “push” like myself. Just my two cents…
long live boost!
look some of us are still into speed and GM knows that.(and other car makers) thats why they still make the higher in cars. V8s and fast v6s. i drive a moded Buick Regal GSX and love it. it has the power and if i dont get on it i get good gas milage. racing will always hit the streets. you just cant do it were there is people around. you have to be smart about it. cant risk other peoples lives. they do it in remote areas. it cant be stopped and if the females tell me to slow down that when you kick her out the car. she can catch the bus. on your insurance its all bout your driving record. im getting a Grand Cherokee SR8. 420hp AWD and my insurance is only gooing up $80 more a month. if your happy with how your car looks, who cares what other people think. that my input on this
Awwww… how cute. Let me guess, you bought a SLP grill and badge off of Ebay and now call your car a GSX?
And what is YOUR point? Talk is chep. I KNOW what my ride can do. What can you say for yourself…..? I bet your drive your parents car, better yet the wifes? What happen? You lost to one in a race and still butt hurt about it? grow up bubba?!
So, you have a modded GSX eh? Looks to me like your definition of modding your GS is by putting a CAI on it? I’m sure all that weight you have added in worthless stereo equipment has more than made up for the 1.3 hp your CAI added.
http://home.elp.rr.com/teamsters/dee.html
Why oh why come to a board and lie about your car? Do you think it makes you look smart? You don’t have a GSX… end of story.
PS - Your friends ‘modding’ V6 mustangs and camaros is just plain laughable.
yea lets bet. his mustang will beat you in a race or better yet we have a RX& that will dust you from start to finnish if you up to it lets bet the slips to the car then. then ill show you whats its all about. all you are is talk. and as for my car its better than what you drive and i know its way better in speed that yours. all you can do is just talk. your just a person who thinks they know what they are talking about….but we all know you dont know anything. come on, lets see if the wife will let you use the ride….punk
That’s rich, you calling me a Punk? Look at the facts. You are blathering away trying to look big by offering to race me for pink slips for cars that you don’t even own. Yet you have no clue what kind of vehicles I own and race. Sounds like if you want to look at a punk, you should go look in the mirror. But hey, keep on blathering away and tell everyone how you owned me… on some little lonely corner of the internet. The only one true fact we have is that you lied about what kind of car you own. Can you say owned?
you know what all i see is someone who keeps running the mouths and cant back it up…..thats the point. if i ever run into you make sure you pull me over to show me what you have. your right i dont know what you drive but i can back up what i talk and you are a punk….you just sit on your computer and fined away to talk crap to people…… get a life and grow up!!!
God, I fear I may have to get out my Punk to English dictionary if I plan to keep this argument going. I mean seriously, learn to use the shift key, and for gods sake… read your post before you click the Submit Comment button. I mean, seriously, go back reread your post and try and type it syntactically correct. I’ll bet you for pinks that you can’t do it. [since we are making up BS bets anyways] [[god, now you’re dragging me down to your level of ignorance and beating me with experience.]]
oh?!! O.K. I’ll get right on it…. you need to check yours too. Its god sake. Not Gods sake. I guess i’m not the only one here……and you can talk. hahaha! Your funny bro. LOL thanks! I’m think your not bright. But funny.
I just want the nerd who had the post about race cars being for the track and saying his wife will slap him if he drives too fast to reply….lol
Yeah yeah yeah, whatever. A front wheel drive SS? Big whoop. Chevy, you want to make this a REAL SS, you need rear wheel drive at least. Step it up to something bigger than a 2.4L engine too. Otherwise, it’s just not worth it.
SS, LT It doesn’t matter chevy hhr rocks!!!
Man you two are pathetic…Don’t both of you have somewhere to be. This is an hhr forum, not a place to let everyone know just how insecure you are by trying to take others down a notch over their cars, of all things. Next time try focusing on something that is actually important in life…like enjoying it. That being said (God I hate proletarian types, sorry for the big word boys)I just bought an hhr lt and it is just great. The performance is reasonable (no rocket but it’s more how you drive in this country)the quality seem very high for this price range (except the interior fabric…very cheap and stains easily as it is solid colour)and the look is great. Everyone has compared it to the p.t cruiser but it looks very different. Everyone compared the first camaro to the mustang that it was designed to compete with. Who cares who is the first one off the mark, When athletes win gold and break records at the Olympics do we say ” remember the guy that set that old world record, he did it first so he is better” hmm. You think that one through, if you still have the energy.
I own a 06 Maxx SS which has 240hp supercharged fwd and at times it will pull out of control because of the pretty good power it puts out. Its not like a camaro or corvette pull but at times its hard to control if you really step on it. The downfall to that like you guys said is it might be hard to control. I would absolutly like to see it be a SS HHR but the control will absolutly be a problem. Either way I say they produce it to compete with that ugly ass pt cruiser turbo.
HHR is a fine looking throw back to better times—hope the 2008 will come with at least a 5 speed auto trans. and do not care about turbo—30 mpg plus would be nice–R B
Hell, I think GM has a decent car on their hands. Granted it might not be the fastest car but you can always do your own little mods to increase hp. Everyone is getting into the “golden years” of car. I personally think Ford missed with the look of the Mustang, they could have at least tried a little hard on that one. Anyways, the HHR is supposed to resemble a modern day “Woodie” and you can’t tell me if you got that thing in green and glued some balsa wood to it that it would not resemble a ’40s Woodie.
Does anyone on this list own the HHR panel? I would consider buying one even though that means rear seat passengers better not be claustrophobic… BUT what kind of visibility can I expect backing out of a driveway or parking lot spot? THAT scares me!
Sorry Sunnyfield, the HHR panel doesn’t have back seats.
I have an 06 LS Model HHR. The more I drive this car the more I like it. Just the way it is.
Just my 2 cents. The first time that I saw the HHR,
the looks is what drew me to it to start with. I bought
that HHR, I did not even check to see if there were other models avalible. I payed for it right then & there. I bought my HHR in July of 2006 (new), I drive it everyday. I’ve always drove and owned V-8’s. The HHR is the very 1st 4 cylinder automobile I have purchased. I do not have any complaints with my HHR.
I would like to see GM bring out sone type of special edtion HHR with a V-8. The supurcharged V-6 might be as fast or even faster than most V-8’s, but it’s still a V-6. Any how thats my opinion & thought. And thats from a guy who thinks that the smell of burning rubber is the best smell in the world. Utill next time, Keep the wheels-a-spinnin’ and the beavers-a grinnin’. C-YA
[…] After over a year of speculation (WINDING ROAD broke the story last June), Chevrolet has finally unwrapped the SS edition of the HHR crossover. GM Car Czar Bob Lutz made the announcement at the Woodward Dream Cruise event late last week. To say the car was one of Detroit’s worst kept secrets would be an understatement. […]
I have the spring time edition hhr and i love it, i also put dual exaust on it, and a turbocharger it’s fast
