OK Corrals Chinese Automaker to Build British Sportscar
Just a few years ago, suggesting that a Chinese automaker had designs on reigniting a defunct British sportscar firm in the heart of Oklahoma would've been ample grounds for a sobriety test. But here we are. In fact, in a New York Times article published today on the surprising trinational developments, no less of an authority than our own David E. Davis, Jr., discusses MG's American history, which could provide a glimpse into the brand's future.

Nanjing Automobile Group, which purchased the remains of the bankrupt MG Rover Group in 2005, intends to become the first Chinese automaker to set up shop in America. In an announcement made today, NAG indicated it will build a new version of the MG TF Coupe in Ardmore, Oklahoma in 2008. Further, it plans to headquarter its U.S. and European operations for the renascent marque in Oklahoma City.

Recent scuttlebutt out of MG, the British marque recently purchased by China’s Nanjing, is that the company’s planned facility in Ardmore, Oklahoma, has been ashcanned, something confirmed by an MG official recently on NPR. Why, then, is the company’s joint-venture partner in the States, Oklahoma Global Motors, telling Automotive News China that they’re still on the case?
