Stylish Exercise: The Mercedes-Benz CLCs that didn’t Make it
While the new 2008 Mercedes-Benz CLC certainly isn’t bad looking, judging from a few of our reader comments, it isn’t ready to set the world alight with its styling either.
Often times, when a new car is announced to less than rave reviews from the car-buying masses, people tend to wonder how the styling department arrived at the final look. Well if these sketches of possible styling directions for the CLC can be believed, we can at least get an idea of what M-B had to choose from before it pulled the trigger on the new car.
Granted, we’re not entirely sure where the proprietors of CarScoop found these renderings, so take them with a grain of salt. But, authentic or not, they do provide a nice “could have been

I like the photo representation of specimen A. It's a little busy, probably would have been a real pain to build for the price. But I like it in sort of a "Hot Chick goes Goth in a Darth Vader sort of way."

Someday, I would like someone to explain how sketches lead to the styling of actual production cars.
What is the point of producing drawings of cars that would need to be modified so heavily to be production-ready that they would bear little resemblance to the original drawing?
Example: Many of these drawings leave no room between the tire and the fender. You'd have to make the wheels smaller or raise the car just to make the car comply to physical laws, which would throw off the proportions. Proper proportioning is fundamental to good design.
Maybe this is how cars like the Sebring reach production.

The first one, the side profile...I like that. It's got muscle and rake and looks theoretically producible. But you cannot help but think that the CLC is just a little throwaway project in M-B's bigger scheme, and won't get the assets. Too bad.
