Mercedes-Benz, according to Auto Express, is on the verge of launching an AMG-badged diesel model.

With the unwrapping of Ferrari’s Biofuel F430 and Audi’s R8 V12 TDI, Mercedes is, likely, quick to follow suit in the high-performance diesel market. No official word from Mercedes-Benz yet, so we’ll have to wait and see.

However, CAFE standards in the U.S. are pushing automakers to not only adjust its standard models, but its high-ends too.

I don’t believe R8 and AMG buyers care about mileage. I don’t know if I can get excited about an AMG diesel. Sure, the 19 mpg will be better than the 14 on the petrol, but a zero-to-sixty time of seven seconds on what will probably be a six-figure car doesn’t sound so cool.
