GM’s New Pickup Campaign Heavy On Flag-Waving

It’s no secret that General Motors is betting big on its new range of GMT900 pickups. I have been thinking for a while that patriotic advertising has been the Detroit Big 3's problem and part of the reason they are doing so bad. It seems like they have been relying on the notion that "people will buy our cars just because they are american cars." Baloney. Americans, especially those of who are automotive enthusiasts, want the best and coolest car for the money. Criteria includes things like reliability, price, warranty, style, performance, perception, being able to brag about the car to the neighbors, etc. Those are the things people care about. Anything else is just fluff. I bet you would be hard pressed to find someone who puts 'domestic' above price or reliability or quality or any number of other things.
Chevy trucks are great trucks. My dad has a 2000 Silverado, and he loves it. I would be much more tempted by advertising that talked about their capabilities or specs or something. I don't think I will ever buy a vehicle simply because it is American. But, I will buy a truck if I can be shown or convinced that it is a great truck that will do everything I need/want it to do. They should focus on selling the truck, instead of selling the country that created it.
