Freshly joined with smaller rival Nanjing, Chinese automaker SAIC is the new owner of not just the MG nameplate, but the production facility in Longbridge, UK as well.

SAIC is now looking to take the Longbridge plant, last active in 2005, out of mothballs. The plan is to make the plant the new home of SAIC’s European operations, starting the ball rolling by reupping production of the MG TF roadster. The plant has the capacity to build up to three different models, so resumed production of the MG 3 and MG 7 is a possibility as well.

Hoping to spice up the place with a bit of its own influence, the brand new Roewe W2 from SAIC could find its way into UK production as well.

Are they looking to bring the MG brand back to the U.S.? With the Mazda Miata, Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky, and the possible Dodge Demon going into production, a MGF offered for a competitive price might actually make the SCCA name mean the “Sports” Car Club of America again instead of the “Sedan” Club of America. I try watching the SCCA runoffs and I understand why they have to run sedans, but I fervently wish the availablity of sports cars would allow them to outlaw sedans from the series or at least creat sedan only and sports car only catagories.
