BMW Will Decide this Year About Electric Car for U.S.
BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer said in an interview with German publication Auto Motor und Sport, that the automaker will make a decision this year as to whether or not it will move forward with plans for a battery powered car for the U.S. market.
BMW is forced with the choice of manufacturing such a vehicle on its own, or seeking out a partner as a means of speeding development, and cutting cost. The electrically powered car is becoming an increasingly attractive option for the German company, as spiraling oil and gasoline prices are likely to play an ever-larger role in consumer decision-making.
Additionally, as a large vehicle manufacturer in the U.S., Reithofer said that BMW would need to offer an “ecologically compatible car

An electric 1-series sized car would be great. Give me solid 150-200 mile range, price it within reason of the 135, and send me two (one 2 door, and one 5 door) please.

They should do a series hybrid with a small diesel or Wankel, the powertrain would have a lower total weight and greater range and performance. This would be more in line with BMW's values than a pure electric.

Making sports sedans and having people buy them is what BMW values regardless of the powertrain.

I wonder why nobody has put out so much as a concept diesel series hybrid. It seems like an excellent, practical solution. All the benefits & performance of an electric car, with the range of a diesel.
