Wireless Internet In Your Car? Has The World (Wide Web) Gone Mad?
We warmed up to the idea of "twd" (texting while driving). We thought navigation systems were
cool—and helpful in a pinch. When it came to iDrive, we cringed at first, but as the years passed we got used to it (actually, we’re still cringing). Now, a company out of California, Autonet, promises to make your car a mobile hot spot.
Autonet uses the nationwide cellular data networks to provide customers with a Wi-Fi service that can reach up to 100 feet outside of their vehicles. With speeds up to 800 kilobits per second, the service rivals many in-home setups, allowing Internet access on the go.

Whoa...time to give up your AOL dial-up account and get a cable modem. Even DSL betters that several times over.
Any way...EVDO Rev. A is rolling out. Rev. isn't far off.
Various flavors of WiMax are trying to gain a foothold...I think we can agree that wireless data is has a big role in our mobile futures.
Perhaps so that Big Brother can reach right in the car and zap you every time you fudge the speed limit by 5mph or squeeze that last drop of sunshine from a yellow light.

The more I see things like this, the more I'm motivated to save up for a Lotus Elise (or a Caterham kit) before the technoids and multitaskers and electronannies turn everything - including our cars - into overwired, overcomplicated extensions of the Matrix.
I knew things were going to get bad when BMW started placing a phone button amidst all the other redundant steering-wheel controls; this is just another step toward a Brave New World that I, for sure, wish deeply to avoid.
