NOS 1948 Tucker Torpedo Radio

Although finding an original 1948 Tucker Torpedo is a difficult task, sourcing parts – particularly new-old stock parts – must be close to impossible. We once stumbled upon a steerable center headlamp at a local swap meet, but its rusted condition labeled it as anything but new.

Thus our interest was piqued when we stumbled upon this original Tucker radio on eBay, which the seller purports to be “NOS”. There’s no way to be entirely certain, but given its clean appearance in photos and the inclusion of the original “Tucker Motors” shipping box, this may very well be true - helping justify the $700+ pricetag.

+ eBay: Tucker Automobile Radio (N.O.S.)

Sold as one unit, the Tucker’s radio actually consists of two parts. What appears to be a normal head unit, consisting of the tuner dial and controls, uses a long cable to connect to the tuner and amplifier, both installed within a suitcase-like housing.

Although it may prove worthwhile to clean electrical contacts and replace some tubes, that’s something only the winning bidder need worry about. With less than a day left, it’s still up for grabs.

Tucker actually produced radios for the aftermarket to support the car venture. It’s not uncommon to see Tucker radios at swap meets.

Actually, these radios are fairly common. It would appear that Tucker had a large run of radios made (anticipating a production run of more than 51!) and as such NOS ones come up for sale every now and then. In fact, its pretty much a given that they all are NOS, as there was a never a car for them to be put into!
