Editor’s Note: The audiophiles over at our sister publication, The Absolute Sound, were quite taken with Jaguar’s C-XF concept, though perhaps for different reasons than a typical WINDING ROAD reader. They were fixated upon the Detroit show star because of the concept’s high-end Bowers and Wilkins (B&W) audio system, about which they filed this report:

We learned at press time that Jaguar has chosen Bowers & Wilkins (B&W) to create an advanced automotive audio system for Jaguar’s C-XF concept car, unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show in early January. This alliance suggests that Bowers & Wilkins will supply premium audio systems in Jaguar production vehicles. This move is a logical step in the trend of audio companies developing branded, premium audio systems for luxury cars (Lexus and Mark Levinson, Aston Martin and Linn, Audi and Bang & Olufson, and Mercedes and Harman-Kardon).

Bowers & Wilkins was involved in the concept car’s development from the start, allowing them to engineer innovative solutions to the unique challenges of the automotive environment. For example, Bowers & Wilkins developed “Bass Beam” technology that loads low-frequency drivers in an enclosure that is part of the doors’ structural elements. This approach reportedly provides better bass than is possible from traditional woofer-mounting locations.

The tweeters employ diamond diaphragms and are loaded in Bowers & Wilkins’ Nautilus tubes, in this case compact spirals rather than straight tubes, allowing placement in tight spots. Some of the drive units employ Kevlar diaphragms, a material long used by B&W in their home loudspeakers. Arrays of dome drive units (“Selective-Directivity”) under DSP control are used for delivering clarity to passengers in the rear seats, or alternatively for providing improved soundstaging when reproducing multichannel music for front passengers.

I love the stylized leaping cat on the dash. This is a really impressive concept.

The cat looks like one of Infiniti’s “style concepts” put down with a heavy brush. Nice though.

Looks like it could give Bang & Olufsen’s “Advanced Sound System” (yes, ASS) in the Audi A8 a run for it’s money.
