Chevy Volt Takes a $5,000 Price Hike, Already
General Motors has now boosted the price of Chevy Volt from $30,000 to $35,000 when it rolls off the production line in 2010.
GM says accessories like windshield wipers and audio systems that won’t drain the Volt’s battery are driving up the manufacturing costs. GM spokesman Dee Allen, told Wired, “We had set a target of $30,000, but if it comes in closer to $35,000 and it means meeting the 2010 deadline, that's the direction we're going to go.

I thought Lutz recently said it would be in the $40,000 range?

This is getting to be ridiculous, when this car was announced ti was supposed to be sub 30, by the time it launches, it will be over 40k. I think I would rather take the 40k, and buy a Prius and spend the other 15k on a boat.

GM is banking a lot on the Volt, and the General's track record has been good in the past three years.

It might have cost $30k if they were allowed to develop the technology over time. But now that they MUST develop it quickly, prepare to wallet up. BTW, the future Prius won't be cheap either. Glad it's your money and not mine.

[...] As well they should. Although it currently carries the usual show car flare and extravagance, we hear this is a pretty good peek at a forthcoming 9-1 compact. Thus far, the look is rather nice - the front carries the traditional Saab graphic, although the rear form is certainly a break from tradition. The narrow LED taillamps, set within slim bezels in a cyan plastic surround, remind us slightly of the current Subaru Impreza, but moreso of Chevrolet’s conceptual Volt. [...]

There's lots of cars cheaper than this (35K+) that get great gas mileage. They're gonna need to keep the price down if they expect to win anyone over.
