Following on the success of the 427R Mustang, Roush ups the ante with its new 428R. There will only be 200 428Rs produced for 2008.

Upgrades over the 427R include 435 horsepower and 400 foot-pounds of torque, a chrome powdercoated supercharger, a variety of billet trim for under the hood, two less lights up front, and it lacks a Mustang logo on the grille. The usual amount of Roush logos and insignias adorn the interior and exterior of the 428R.

Roush also admitted plans for a 429R to be released next year. The cars are intended to honor the 427, 428, and 429 engines for which Ford fans have so much admiration. Look for the 428R to appear in dealerships this October.

ROUSH CONTINUES THE HOMAGE TO FORD HISTORY WITH 428R* MUSTANGLIVONIA, Mich. (September 24, 2007) - ROUSH Performance continues to pay tribute to Ford's legendary history with the 428R* Mustang, a limited edition pony car which follows in the tremendous success of their 427R* model introduced last year and which remains in the ROUSH product lineup for the 2008 model year.

The ROUSH 428R* Mustang will arrive at participating Ford dealerships in October 2007.

"We are continuing to honor and celebrate the heritage of the proudest models of Ford racing history - the 427, 428 and 429 (engines)," stated Jack Roush. "These are iconic numbers in the Ford world and it is an honor to put them onto ROUSH Mustangs and insert them back into the muscle car world."

"The 427R* is easily the most popular Mustang model that ROUSH has ever introduced to the market," said Joe Thompson, ROUSH Performance's vice president and general manager. "That vehicle will remain the cornerstone of our lineup, but to celebrate Ford's history of automotive breakthroughs we will build a 428R* in 2008 and a 429R* in 2009. These cars are intended to be a collector's edition with limited production that pays respect to Ford Muscle Car history."

The 2008 ROUSH 428R* Mustang is limited to 200 vehicles, each a potent street slayer with 435 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque thanks to the famous ROUSHcharger* system, which, in the 428R* is a chrome powdercoat which glistens when the hood is raised. Other under-the-hood goodies include ROUSH billet radiator and intercooler radiator caps, oil cap, and strut tower caps which add to the sparkling engine compartment.

The looks of the car continue on the exterior also, with the ROUSH front fascia, chin spoiler, hood scoop and rear wing adding to the muscular look. The locking hood pins show the world that there is something lurking under the hood, and the black bar high-flow grille adds to the aesthetics.

As for handling, the ROUSH suspension package makes it simple to manage the left and right turns. Changed by the ROUSH technicians are the front and rear shocks, front and rear springs, front and rear sway bars, jounce bumpers and an anti-wheel hop kit is installed at the Livonia, Mich., factory. ROUSH 18-inch cast wheels and high-performance tires grip the road, and the offroad exhaust system gives the ROUSH 428R* the necessary growl expected from a V-8 Mustang.

The interior of the 428R* gets the ROUSH treatment as well as ROUSH sport leather seating is installed, the white face electro luminescent gauge cluster, and the ROUSH short throw shifter with retro ball makes quick gear changes. Rounding out some of the interior upgrades are ROUSH sill plates and floor mats.

As with all ROUSH vehicles, the 428R* comes with unique fender and decklid badges as well as a pair of engine bay plaques to authenticate this as an official ROUSH vehicle. Each vehicle comes with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Jack Roush. The ROUSH 428R* is available with either a five-speed manual or automatic transmission.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZ...

Another Ford Mustang nostalgia edition. Chevy, please do not do this to the Camaro. Unless it is a Yenko.

Mena

Only 435hp on a 428ci supercharged car?

john

^^^That is the problem with waxing nostalgic. The engine is just the 4.6L. Which is 280ci + supercharger displacement is no where near 427-8-9ci. No way to get a real big block in there to be a true homage.

chris

Im no Ford fan, and all these tribute edition stangs are starting to get silly like another Bullitt edition stang, but I have to admite that the Mustang is a huge sales success for Ford, and its a neat little car that performs well and is mass afforable. We should all hope the new Camaro and Challenger follow this bluprint....but they probably wont, they will be over priced I believe.

Jonathan Fung [Gotakon]

I agree. There are just a few too many special edition tributes out there now. But I still think this one looks nice.

The problem with the Roush and Saleen specials is that they retail for a high premium, yet offer numbers below Ford's own GT500. Common sense, people.

The Stig

^^ Yep. Not to mention you can get their performance enhancing parts yourself a la carte for cheaper than their packaged cars.

Yeah, it's the billet radiator cap, intercooler cap, oil filler cap and strut tower caps that sold me. Who cares if a 428R* doesn't really have a 428 engine in it. Most people won't notice because of all the dazzle.

Ben

Chris, it's not a little car.

There seems to be a lot of special edition Mustangs out there, but there are a lot of Mustang fans too.

RacerRobbie

Too many choices? Variety is good, just don't purchase the latest edition of a throwback if you do not want it. I personally like it when the consumer is given more widgets or mustangs or whatever to choose from. How many camaro choices are currently on the market? Hmmm....

john

@RacerRobbie

When the new Camaro is available next year it will already be better than the Roush, Saleen, Shelby offerings. Out of the box it will have 400hp and IRS. You can bet the SS model will be at least 430hp if not the 7L, 505hp, Z06 engine. There will be no need for 50 different variations to try and get the last possible dollar out of the model.

RacerRobbie

John - Try activating the impartiality filter just a tad before pronouncing a product as the best, even before it has been released for testing and reviews.
:-) Also all those variations you mention are by private companies (Roush, etc), not Ford. Guess there wouldn't be so many choices if buyers did not want them. Econ 101...

What most people are missing with the Roush mustangs is the fact that its not just the engine that has been upgraded. It also has a full roush racing suspention done by roush in their shop.
