Report: AMG Adding Twin Turbos, Direct Injection to Mercedes V-8
The March 26 issue of Autocar’s print magazine has got an interesting tidbit regarding Mercedes-Benz tuning specialists AMG.
The magazine claims to have high-placed MB sources for a story about AMG adding twin turbos to upcoming versions of the 6.2-liter V-8. The new powerplants will also boast direct injection technology, though merely raising the engine’s horsepower isn’t said to be at the root of the changes.
AMG is said to be seeking improvements in efficiency and a lowering of fuel consumption, with the changes. Autocar’s source says “There will be a slight increase in power, but really it’s all about creating optimal conditions for the introduction of direct injection.

DI is awesome technology. I, for one, welcome our new turbocharged overlords!

Huge HP numbers are impressive, but when you're talking about AMG levels, I'd sacrifice 100-125hp at the drop of a hat if it meant mid-20s city/mixed MPG.

I love the idea, should help the fuel economy numbers, which turbos and DI do, and I also welcome the rumors of diesel performance cars from AMG

Adding twin turbos to anything makes it better.

I don't know about that...this means nothing if Mercedes continue to be unreliable and overweight jokes.

Improved fuel consumption...
Do AMG expect us to believe that a single AMG customer is bothered about MPG!
Should be fun to drive.

Maybe not customers, but AMG/MB is surely worried about its ability to continue to sell products in the face of stricter environmental legislation.
