Seeing as our recent exclusive access story on the Mini Cooper S John Cooper Works coupe and Clubman attracted a little indignant huffing and puffing from Mini geeks due to a couple of incorrect pricing projections, we’re bringing you the definite truth from the floor of the New York auto show.
According to Mini USA spokespeoples, whereas the last generation’s $6500-ish JCW kit was almost entirely from-factory only (dealer-installed kits were available only for a short period in 2006) due to its added complexity of all-new headers, new supercharger, and limited-slip differential, the price of the new more dealer-installation-friendly JCW kit is set at $2100 plus two hours of service for mounting.

The Cooper S JCW coupe starts at $29,200 and the Clubman JCW starts at $31,450, and both start delivereies to U.S. customers on July 14th. Cooper S owners who want the JCW kit retrofitted will get a bolt-on new performance exhaust, a higher-flow airbox attached to the engine intakes, plus the requisite 208-horse ECU electro-tweakery.
And for 2009? Despite breathless announcements by some of the same Mini geeks that they’ve heard that a GP-style kit is not in Mini’s plans, we happily can tell them that they are wrong. Our Mini source at New York assures us that something offering “230 or so” horsepower is on the way sooner than we think and that it could very well be called “GP kit” once again.
