Godzilla Unlimited: Tuner Cracks Nissan GT-R ECU

One of the many safety features on the very fast Nissan GT-R is a speed limiter that would only switch off when a GPS link messaged back to the home office saying that the car was within the safe bounds of a race track. On normal roads the sophisticatedly encrypted ECU would only allow GT-R owners to play at speeds up to 112 mph.

All that is said to be changing however, as U.S.-based company COBB Tuning has said that it has cracked the ECU, and is in the process of in-house testing. Along with allowing the untethered GT-R to reach its fully mad top-end of 193 mph (claimed), cracking the Nissan computer should also allow COBB to tinker with fuel-mapping and boost pressure controls.

COBB has also been busy working with Nissan’s 350Z and Infiniti G37; the company plans to have aftermarket exhaust systems, suspension mods, and more electronic trickery available soon for those cars as well.

the GT-R only goes to up to 112 mph on the road, that sucks. i have driven above this speed so many times in the UAE with my SS. here in montreal, the streets don’t allow you to go anywhere at high speeds. seriously, the roads in montreal are the worst i’ve ever seen.
but the bottom line 112 mph for good some roads is slow. i wouldn’t buy a car that doesn’t allow me to control the speed i am driving.

OMG!! Someone’s cracked the ECU already? LOL! Where there’s a wallet, there’s a way!

112mph?

Ridiculous.

I was expecting to read that it Mine’s or Yashio Factory…Top Secret, etc. But Cobb? Good going guys!

Wow. I have never gone 112 before. Not too many places in Hawaii where it’d be safe to do that.

Did 87 once… Lost my license for a week…
Max. allowed was 50…

87? That’s it? You poor soul…..

So that means that theoretically I could win in my MkV GTI against the GT-R in a high speed contest…hmm…think about the bragging rights to that poor fat old guy and his new GT-R when you tell him that not only did he pay 3 times as much as you did for his toy, but that you can crack 140, whereas he’s stuck at 112.

All cars are limited to 112 mph in Japan. Move along, nothing to see here.

Some Guy April 10th, 2008 5:19 PM Link

Max. I’ve ever gone is 131mph in my V6 Sedan…

whoever wrote this article has been seriously misinformed , the 112mph limiter is only on Jspec models not on euro and US spec models.

Yes, these people are misinformed. The US spec is limited to 156mph (250km/h), which is pretty fast. Anyways, these articles are making it seem like the US is the first to crack the GTR’s ecu. Well, the Japanese has also done it too(i.e Amuse and mine’s), and as a matter of fact, Amuse has a 580hp GTR with just intake, exhaust and ECU tuned (Check BMI cover of the GTR).
