Flat-Four Fabulousness: Renegade Hybrid’s Subaru WRX-Powered Porsche 914
The folks over at Renegade Hybrids have apparently tired of stuffing Porsche’s 914 with small-block Chevrolet engines, a popular age-old shoe-in for Stuttgart’s angular love/hate midship runabout.
Instead, the Las Vegas tuner has figured out how to fold-in the 2.0-liter turbocharged flat-four from Subaru’s WRX. The boxer layout of the engine is said to require no chassis modifications (though the turbocharger and intercooler will likely require relocation). The company has already fitted the WRX STI engine, giving the flyweight 914 what must be a heroic power-to-weight ratio, as it delivers around 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque… before modifications. Renegade Hybrids reports that so-equipped, the 914 is not only very reliable and absurdly quick, it is capable of over 25 miles-per-gallon.
The vehicle pictured is Ed Hunziker’s 914, which has a host of additional modifications, including a Beck 934 widebody kit, a comprehensively reworked suspension with Bilstein coilovers, brakes cribbed from a 911 SC, and massive 18-inch Victor Equipment alloys wrapped in Toyo Proxes T1R tires. Some of us might pass on the widebody kit (which only looks necessary to accommodate those steamroller wheels), but otherwise, it looks delish.

I prefer stock-bodied 914s, but I bet that thing is a blast to drive. I wonder how it'd work with a normally aspirated Subie 2.5. Hmm...

I always considered the 914 the German Edsel.

Not the most desirable car on the road...but pretty damn cool! I'll bet that thing handles like it's on rails!

Did they use the awd system as well?? If they tied the whole STi drivetrain into one of those I need a price so I can start saving my pennies. Hell, even with just the motor that thig has to be insane. WOW!
