Ferrari P4/5 Gets a Touch-Up

If you remember how we waxed poetical-like over the amazing Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina in our November/December issue of 2006, then you'll want to read this.

Owner of the P4/5 Jim Glickenhaus has just mailed us these two photos that show the car running this past May's Historic Targa Florio in Sicily and then the car with its fresh exhaust tips in place soon thereafter on the grounds at Pininfarina where the car's designer Jason Castriota led the team.

(Click through to find out why Glickenhaus decided to change the exhaust and see a photo of the original exhaust.)

We asked him whether it was done for technical reasons or styling concerns. Glickenhaus replied that it ended up being a little of both. Following the Targa Florio, Glickenhaus brought the P4/5 back to Pininfarina for a full teardown and check-up for any problems. (It's inspiring to note that the car has over 4,000 road miles on it now and that Glickenhaus praises most the P4/5's desire to be used regularly.)

Glickenhaus prefers the form of these exhaust tips over the former round ones and he says that the exhaust flows better as well with the shape, while this in turn has created improvements in the air flow over the large integrated rear wing.

On a loud side note, Glickenhaus tells us also that the exhaust now has incorporated an "off road" switch in the cockpit for track excitement. This keeps the catalysts involved, but bypasses the mega-muffler. The owner states simply, "It sounds pretty wild in this mode."

I imagine you could use any car regularly if you could afford a complete teardown and professional analysis every few thousand miles.

This isn't a mass produced econo-box. If a person can afford to buy a Ferrari P4/5, and then send it to Pininfarina for a one off custom body, a complete teardown every few thousand miles is probably "pocket change" in comparison.

Russ, the P4/5 is a one off custom body, it is mechanically an Enzo.

Jonathan Fung [Gotakon]

Man, I wonder how it sounds in that "off road" mode.

Ducati Minor

Nice, but the guy could've afforded better pictures.

Ok, what kind of job one must have to be able to own a car like this? Is is legal? Are you hiring an apprentice?

Apparently, after bombing through Sicily on the Targa Florio earlier this year, G-haus had some new exhaust tips installed during a routine teardown at Pininfarina. According to an e-mail exchange with Winding Road, he says the new shape improves airflow over the integrated rear wing. The exhaust system can also be manipulated between muffled and unmuffled (for track use) by way of a new bypass switch in the cockpit. Damned if that guys millionz aren't going to good use.
