oem-sprinter-parts.jpgBadge snobbery apparently even extends into the humble world of commercial vehicles.

Apparently, a company called OEM Sprinter Parts is offering complete kits to turn your Dodge or Freightliner-branded Sprinter into its Mercedes counterpart. The Montana-based company offers a complete range of conversion kits, including ones that supply a full Benz grille, a 316CDI grille nameplate, replacement wheel hubs, door decals, and so on. The kits even come with steering wheel badges and a Mercedes’ “signature windshield decal.”

As these all appear to be OEM Benz parts, once all of the pieces have been fitted, only your insurance agent will know the truth.

Yeesh.

Badge snobbery aside, I love how the Sprinter has come from nowhere to dominate the commercial van market. We need more Diesels!

Sprinter Dominate the US comercial van market??????
November sales of this year: Ford 12405; GM = 9601; Sprinter = 1587 Come to think of it I bet you GM might sells more diesel vans than the Sprinter with the Duramax.

Wow, I don’t see the problem with driving a freightliner, the dodge is sort of funny looking but under it all, it’s the same vehicle. I don’t see a big market for this conversion kit, when the majority of these vehicles are owned by large shipping companies.

Winding Road » Archive » “It’s A Type-R, Guys… Honest!” A Growing Trend? January 4th, 2007 2:49 PM Link

[…] Here’s one trend we’d like to see less of: “up-badging.” The term refers to the practice of slapping additional stickers and insignias on a vehicle to make it appear as if it’s something it isn’t. You know the drill—how many Civic DXs on the import scene are masquerading as Si models? It isn’t just the imports these days… Hemi-badged V6 Chargers, 300s and Magnums are apparently also gaining traction among the badge-swapping crowd. Hell, even commercial truck owners are falling prey to this stuff. Well, apparently the trend is a growing one, provided the wonks at CBS 4 Boston are on their game. They even managed to get scribe Jamie Kitman of Automobile Magazine to comment on the trend: “”The benefit is telegraphing other people very quickly that you have more wealth than you really have.” Somehow we doubt that Kitman’s legendary stash of vintage iron is rocking different badges.
